Horn Dog Barley Wine Style Ale
Flying Dog Brewery
Frederick, Maryland
The Hunter S. Thompson-esque labels on this and other Flying Dog beers do nothing for me just like the writer himself did nothing for my brine-washed soul. However this small 7 ounce bottle packs quite a wallop. Perfect for a blizzard in Detroit since we don't get them that often though people probably think that they are common here. Maybe up north we do but I'm not Jerry Hodak and you don't give a flying frog noodle about northerly climes.
The signature of all barley wines is the heavy alcohol content and you feel it from start to finish in this menthol-y framed ale. It's also shrouded in a terse bitter pang of hop infusion that is hardly omnipresent but makes its presence known and won't be denied its humper dog namesake. The malting is generous and the licorice and chocolate notes make you realize that this isn't just any typical cracker brew but a multi-dimensional melting pot of styles and graces.
