Wizard Barley Wine Ale

001

Wizard Barley Wine Ale
Short's Brewing Co.
Elk Rapids, Michigan

With the occult folk art symbolism on this bottle and the stated brewing time being 6 hours and 66 minutes it would make sense that it was produced for Halloween or Harvest time but I'm too lazy to Google the facts and we'll just go with that because it sounds better than saying "Short's employees are a bunch of Satanists". If they are I'm about to join their cult because they are slowly becoming my favorite brewer and since the local beer stores seem to prominently display their singles on the shelf I am all in with their innovative style whereas I probably wouldn't be if forced into buying a sixer.

This is an odd Barley Wine only in the fact that while the alcohol content seems to be elevated, as is the norm, the bold alcohol taste is well masked in the raisiny essence of this very full-bodied brew. With any great beer the flavors come in waves and this one sends a tsunami of alcohol spray which is quickly chased by the dark fruit and raisin flavors which segue into a dry and mitigating hop affect that evolves back into a combination of the three. Add in notes of sweet toasty maltiness and this may be the perfect Barley Wine. The fact that it's been aged probably only heightens these qualities.

I don't know squat about "Wizard Barley Wine Ale", but I am commenting because it looks good. I have a problem which you may be able to help me with. I stopped drinking alcohol 17 years ago. But, I Still like beer. The problem is that I can only find the typical pilsner type NAs. But, when I drank, I loved the heavier beers; Maeiels Weiss, Guinness, Bass Ale, etc. Any leads on this type of beer in an NA? Feel free to e-mail me hukturn@netscape.net
